Storm Felled Tree +++ Two Men Observing the Moon, 2020
Sculpture; PE rigid foam, polystyrene foam, modelling plaster, acrylic paint, imitation gold leaf

The totemic tree form is reconsituted from a depiction of a tree branch in Casper David Friedrich’s 1819/20 painting Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes. The playwright Samuel Beckett noted that this painting inspired him in conceiving of the stage directions for Waiting for Godot. Formal references in the work include those to Meissen porcelan, sculptural fragments in lapidariums, and the contemporary visual language of vandalism and defacement.
